Instructions for Cottage and Sauna Users

ARRIVAL

There is no road access to the cottage; it can be reached either by hiking from the Kalaja parking area along the Kolmen Vuoren trail or by water via Etelä-Konnevesi. Along the Kolmen Vuoren trail, a sign marks the point where a path branches off toward Majaniemi. Driving on roads near the cottage is not allowed, as they are private roads, and Majaniemi Ry is not a shareholder in them!

DOCKS

At the tip of the peninsula, there is a dock designed for larger boats, while on the mainland side, the sauna shore features a paddling dock for kayaks and smaller boats.

KEY

The cottage key is stored in a key box with a combination lock next to the door. The sauna key is located in the cottage's entrance and also fits the cooking shelter’s stove locker. The access code for the key box is sent to the phone number and email provided at the time of booking, 12 hours before the rental period begins.

WATER

There is no well at the cabin. The water in Lake Etelä-Konnevesi is clean, and some local cabin owners use it as drinking water as it is, but we cannot guarantee its purity. If you prefer, you can boil the water before use.

HEATING

The cabin has a wood-burning fireplace. Before lighting a fire, open the fireplace damper located behind the metal chimney. Close it only when you are sure that the embers have completely burned out and no carbon monoxide is forming. The cabin is a wooden structure designed for so-called three-season use. If you stay here during colder weather, you will need a sleeping bag suitable for the conditions to ensure a comfortable night's sleep.

LIGHTING

The cabin has solar-powered lighting. Bring your own grave candle to use as a light at the sauna. Be cautious with candles—never leave a burning candle unattended. Always place candles on a non-flammable surface and avoid placing tea lights or oil candles too close to each other due to the risk of flare-ups.

SLEEPING

Majaniemi's cabin has two bunk beds in the main room, providing sleeping space for four people. There is also an additional bunk bed in the entrance area. The beds have mattresses, but no bed linens, blankets, or pillows—please bring your own sleeping bag suitable for the season.

COOKING

he gas stove and gas bottle are stored in the stove cabinet of the outdoor cooking shelter. The cabin has basic kitchenware, including a pot, frying pan, tableware, plates, cutlery, and dishwashing supplies. These are intended for use with the gas stove. If you prefer to cook over an open fire, bring your own fireproof cookware. Dishes should be washed in a washbasin, and the used water should be poured onto the ground in the middle of the peninsula to help keep Lake Etelä-Konnevesi clean for the future. Gas Stove Instructions: Connect the pressure regulator to the gas bottle by pressing the locking ring upwards with your fingers and firmly attaching the regulator to the bottle. Press the stove’s control knob while turning it to open the gas flow. Light the gas while holding the knob down for a few seconds. The flame failure safety system will shut off the gas if you release the knob too soon. If this happens, allow the gas to dissipate and try again after a couple of minutes. Turn the control knob to zero to turn off the stove. The gas stove must not be used indoors!

WASTE MANAGEMENT

There is no organized waste management in Majaniemi, so we follow the principles of leave-no-trace hiking. Biodegradable waste, such as food scraps, can be composted in the toilet. All other waste must be taken with you when you leave and disposed of through regular waste management services.

ASHES

There is a lidded metal ash container at the cabin for collecting ashes. Ashes must not be thrown into nature due to the risk of fire.

WC

Along the trail leading to the national park, about 50 meters away, there is a composting dry toilet. Always add cover material after use to keep it pleasant for the next visitor.

SAUNA

The sauna is an old earth-floored smoke sauna that has been fitted with a chimney and a wood-burning stove. The original smoke stove is no longer in use—it has been left in place as a reminder of the past. Washing water is taken from the lake and heated in the water tank attached to the stove. Be careful with hot water—the water heated in the stove's tank is often boiling hot! There is no damper in the sauna chimney that needs to be opened before heating. The protective cover on the window can be opened by unscrewing the wing nut inside the sauna. Always empty the stove's water tank after use to prevent rusting or freezing.

FIREWOOD

The firewood storage is located on the sauna terrace. Please use the firewood sparingly—firewood supply is maintained in winter with an ATV and in summer by boat.

FINAL CLEANING

Clean the cabin and sauna before you leave to ensure a pleasant arrival for the next guest. Cleaning includes: Wiping down/washing the table, chairs, and kitchen area with a damp cloth Washing the dishes Sweeping the floors Emptying ashes from the fireplaces Collecting and removing all trash from the cabin, sauna, and yard area
